I was in attendance and it was a great atmosphere. Hot but could have been a lot worse (some cloud coverage until the sun went down).
In reality, probably the worst scheduling for each season would be an upper tier away game with any of the BCS conference teams. Our weaknesses play right into our opponents strengths (for example, D.T. has done a great job of recruiting, but we still have to rely on too many jc transfers and incoming freshmen to step in and play immediately). In this seasons case, we have no experienced safety's, our wide receives are either all new or played very little last year, and one of our strenghts this year was our offensive line with returning studs Paysinger, Booker, and McGriffth - who have all been hurt all preseason and it showed. Than we loose our number two running back for the season before the first snap, Yonus goes out on his first carry, our starting defensive tackle hurts his ankle on the first drive...............all of this against an extremely good, experienced, big, and deep Pac 10 team........
I though the play of our safety's reflected on their inexperience....The youngster from Valley Christian (Hunsucker)is a tremendous athlete but I think he would serve us much better as a running back (he was a natural in high school and those instincts are still there) compared to having to learn all the "reads" of the defense with the offense changing sets and formations all day long. With Yonus' injury and the loss of our number 2 running back, I would make this switch in a second.........also, Ihenario (his brother is a sophmore and plays defensive end , was one of our higher rated freshment recruits this year at the safety position and he isn't afraid to hit (he did get a 15 yard penality for a semi-late hit on a tight end over the middle), but this kid will soon be a big time player.
I saw our team get whipped pretty bad, but I say a lot of talented, big, very young and inexperienced (freshmen and sophmores and first year jc recruits)player_ who have a lot of promise....Give Dick Tomey and his staff some time and I think we will be very proud of this team this year and especially in the years to come. If Dick Tomey is guilty of anything, it was treating us to a special year last season that was more realistically a year or two ahead of schedule..........Stay the course, we have an exciting future coming our way
