The Spartans finished the season with a three-game winning streak defeating New Mexico (20-12) in the New Mexico Bowl. 2006 Arizona State record: 7-6, 4-5 Pacific-10. The Sun Devils ended 2006 losing to Hawai’i (41-24) in the Hawai’i Bowl. Radio Coverage: KLIV (1590 AM, San Jose) originates San Jose State University football broadcasts. Mike Chisholm calls the play-by-play. Neil Parry offers commentary. Air time for the Arizona State game is 6:30 p.m. (PDT). San Jose State head coach Dick Tomey: Embarking on his third season with the Spartans. Has a 12-12 win-loss record at San Jose State. Overall, Tomey is beginning his 27th season as a major college head coach and has a record of 170-122-7. He ranks in top-10 for coaching victories both in WAC and the Pacific-10 Conferences. Tomey is 9-5-1 as a head coach against Arizona State. He was 1-0 as the Hawaii head coach posting a 29-17 victory on December 1, 1979 and 8-5-1 with Arizona. His Arizona teams had a record of 4-2-1 in Sun Devil Stadium. Arizona State head coach Dennis Erickson: Beginning his first season with the Sun Devils. Has a major college coaching record of 148-65-1 covering 18 seasons. He is 1-1 as a head coach against San Jose State. His 1989 Miami team defeated the Spartans, 48-16. The 2006 Idaho team closed out the season losing to San Jose State, 28-13. Erickson was the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at San Jose State from 1979 through 1981. San Jose State-Arizona State series: Arizona State leads the series, 18-11-0. The Sun Devils have won the last 12 games played between these teams including a 53-15 decision on September 29, 2001. The Spartans’ last win in the series was a 21-14 victory in Spartan Stadium on October 16, 1965. The last time a San Jose State won in Sun Devil Stadium was on October 22, 1960 in a 12-7 contest. Among the most notable games between these two head coaches was the 1994 Fiesta Bowl when Arizona posted the first shutout in the bowl game’s history over #10 Miami (Fla.), 29-0. Arizona went on to finish with its first 10-win season in university history and #9 in the final Associated Press national poll. Tomey Joining Exclusive Coaching Group: Dick Tomey will become the 25th coach in college football history to be a head coach in at least 300 major college football games when the Spartans take the field against Arizona State. Tomey & Erickson: Dick Tomey and Dennis Erickson are facing each other for the 11th time as head coaches. Tomey has five coaching victories in which Erickson was on the opposite sideline. They also worked together in 2003 when Erickson was the San Francisco 49ers head coach and Tomey was one of his assistant coaches.
