Posted by SJSdude on 8/12/2007, 8:08 am Most San Jose State veterans were used sparingly or held out of Saturday's scrimmage, allowing the newcomers an opportunity to make an impression. One play earned Steven Claxton a spot on the team charter for the opener Sept. 1 at Arizona State. The 70-play scrimmage concluded with Claxton, a junior cornerback, blocking an extra-point attempt. As Coach Dick Tomey addressed the team at midfield, he announced that Claxton should pack his bags. "We didn't have a blocked field goal all last year," Tomey said. "He got himself a plane ticket to Tempe." Claxton arrived at SJSU in the spring of 2006 as a walk-on candidate from Fresno City College but was ineligible last fall. He remained in school and became eligible in the spring. "I was trying to make as many plays as I could," said Claxton, who also made an interception during passing drills before the scrimmage. "I'm just trying to make the best of it." SJSU's offensive line had a tough opening week. Center Justin Paysinger is sidelined because of back trouble and guards John Booker and Ronnie Castillo were held out of the scrimmage because of minor ailments. Tackle Bradis McGriff suffered a right-knee injury early in the scrimmage, and then tackle Chris Danser aggravated a knee injury a few plays later. Tomey said McGriff's injury isn't expected to be serious, but McGriff was taken to the locker room in a motorized cart. The scrimmage didn't offer much insight into the wide-open battle at wide receiver. Adam Tafralis and Sean Flynn were a combined 3 of 10 passing in limited action, and highly touted junior college transfers David Richmond and Terrance Williams didn't catch a pass. Jacob French made a team-high three receptions for 61 yards.
