Posted by bambi2godzilla on 8/11/2007, 7:44 pm Having typed that, I still do find it curious that the URL for the SJMN is www.mercurynews.com and not www.sanjosemercurynews.com If you type in www.sanjosemercurynews.com, the home page for the SJMN will come up but the URL will appear as www.mercurynews.com The same happens if you type www.bayarea.com It's curious that a newspaper headquartered in San Jose and produced in San Jose chooses to neuter itself in identification. Also, if you click on the 'sports' link at the SJMN site, there is another link offered titled 'colleges' but no specific "SJSU' link. Granted, there is also no Stanford or Cal link either but were not talking about a newspaper situated in Palo Alto or Berkeley. Once you click on the 'colleges' link, a page comes up with separate Stanford, Cal and SJSU information. There is also Santa Clara info. Tellingly, it is offered in that order. This determination must be based on readership or likely readership, with some weight thrown in based on attendance.

I happen to be one that thinks the San Jose Mercury News does an adequate job of covering SJSU athletics, considering the makeup of the readership of the SJMN. the plethora of Bay Area professional teams and the attendance at SJSU events.
