Posted by SJSdude on 8/2/2007, 7:12 am Thursday, August 2, 2007 Spartan mission: San Jose State is coming off a 9-4 season, its best in 16 years, and third-year coach Dick Tomey sees more potential in this year's squad, which begins camp on Tuesday. He also understands that his team must improve significantly to match last season's record, because the schedule is much more difficult. The Spartans open with four straight road games, beginning with Arizona State and Kansas State. Liquid Lowery: San Jose State's preseason Playboy All-America cornerback Dwight Lowery was put on a liquid diet for some of the offseason, although it had nothing to do with caloric intake or digestion issues. On the final day of spring practice, Lowery had his jaw broken in a collision with a running back. He had his mouth wired shut for six weeks. "I had to use a syringe to get things in my mouth," he said. "I was mixing up stuff like chicken and gravy and making it like a liquid. It didn't taste bad. I had things like salsa and beans, sort of a liquid version of Mexican food." Doctors had told him not to lift weights while his mouth was wired shut, but after three weeks, Lowery decided to hit the weights anyway. He had to be careful not to clench his teeth while lifting, though. He had the wires removed a few weeks ago and is ready to go. Graduate QB: Starting Spartans quarterback Adam Tafralis, a fifth-year senior, has graduated with a degree in kinesiology. He is doing an internship at a local high school and will have fewer academic responsibilities. "This is the way I planned it from the start, so when it came down to it, I could have a season like this," he said. Also, he and his father bought a small piece of a restaurant schedule to open in San Jose this month. Briefly: Eligibility coming out of summer school is always an issue for San Jose State. Tomey expects everyone to be eligible to play, but he has to wait until classes are over to know for sure.
