Fei was restless.
The sky was the color of slate and thick with unfallen snow, mountains white washed and waiting. Sleep had never come easy for her and for the past three days it had not come at all; the air was too full, the earth was too quiet, the end was too near. It was as if all the world were holding its breath, waiting as she waited- as they all waited, for the inevitable. So she had wandered, from one end of the Range to the other, a gray ghost in a dying land. From time to time her children had joined her in her final pilgrimage, spoken quietly, lipped her mane, and departed again to attend their own affairs. They worried, much as their father worried, black birds forever lining her spine and darting overhead to join the myriad of sparrows and finches and single owl that seemed hell bent upon keeping an eye on her as well. She couldn’t understand why they were all so concerned; it wasn’t as though she hadn’t been pregnant before.
But it was now, as she returned to the beginning, to the very spot and the very path which had first led her into the Range that she paused, dark eyes turning once more over the mountains and the valley and the home where twilight lingered and the long night of oblivion gathering about its edges, that she knew it was time to go.
Unlike certain others assumed or suspected, this was not an end she wished to see through.
“Rook.”
She calls him softly as she has always called him, reaching for him more with her heart than her voice or her wind. The voice could be ignored, altered, faked, and the wind was fickle, especially now at the end of all things. But her heart was not something that could be fabricated or duplicated by anyone and the one to whom it belonged knew it’s call like a child knows their mother’s voice even in a crowd of strangers. She does not turn at the sound of gathering wings, unphased when the dark stallion appears suddenly at her side, silent, but inquisitive. Storm gray lips comb black hair from green eyes and she smiles.
“We’re leaving.”
