If Holden were a little bit older, he might just laugh off Hesper as something akin to an annoying sister (that is, if his mother ever bred anything other than sons.) Alas, Holden was only as old as he was so instead, he was delightfully intrigued and amused by Hesper and so her exuberance only served to remind him of the months of his childhood that he’d wasted learning how to be older alongside Anatole. He hadn’t forgotten the things that he’d seen along the way, the people he’d met or the stories he’d heard, but the Element seemed to wash all of it away. Now, with Hesper bounding around him like a butterfly, he felt not a day older than he’d been when he left.
Her giggling is incessant but in no way annoying and Holden finds that the sound is like bells, like wind over bottles, like the cry of a gull on a particularly sunny day. Whatever it sounds like, it’s obvious that the young scholar enjoys Hesper’s effervescence and he laughs as she races back towards him.
What he intended to say was “Of course we can see some!” but instead, it came out “Of cou-” because Hesper tumbled into him, the baby-soft skin on their noses touching. Holden quickly snatched his lips back against his chest and chuckled (well, really… giggled) a bit nervously. After quickly regaining his composure, Holden nodded to Hesper, his lanky limbs bringing him to his full height (which, in all honesty, was not that tall.)
“Hmm, well where have you been? I have not explored much of the Element beyond Andarin, but if you have then we’ll have to find somewhere else…” Mischief was written all over Holden’s face – he knew, of course, that neither Holden nor Lycoris would probably find this trip very amusing but in all honesty, he really didn’t care.
Water coursed up his legs, spinning greedily around his chest and stomach and then dripping back down to the earth as he waited.
