She has not ventured far from the embrace of her oak tree. Afraid, is she? Perhaps. Perhaps she is afraid of the things that wait for her beyond the ever-protective branches. The more likely explanation, however, is that she has been so long a part of its bark and leaves that she cannot fathom being away from it. Strange, isn’t it – now that she can remember where she was all that time, she rather enjoyed being in there.
Still, from her hideout, she can watch them. The Wolves. Andarin. She watches as the familiar landscape of her home shifts and re-forms before her very eyes and she knows – oh, how she knows! – that she could never stop loving it. No matter how many times she left the place, was taken from it, or dissolved into it, she would keep coming back. The mountains were her lifeblood, the constant that had sustained her through many years.
The Polestar breathed in the fresh, sharp air and loved it.
Soon, though, the peace of the sloping valley is broken with the harried footsteps of one of her old friends, a suspicious shadow bounding along at her heels. Nyota’s face alights with a smile and she shouts to the mare before she is even near, “Lycoris!” The name rings with laughter and Nyota is so glad she is still here. When she crashes against Nyota, the Oracle equally wraps herself around the younger scholar, laughing at the words that bubble like the edge of the ocean out of Lycoris’ pretty mouth. “Yes, yes flowers and rainbows my dear,” she purrs, stretching her nose down to Hesper greedily even as Lycoris introduces them.
“Hello dear,” Nyota says, her voice mellifluous as she speaks to the girl. “I have a son not much older than you. Perhaps you’ve met him? Holden’s his name… he was around here somewhere…” her voice trails off; indeed, she hadn’t even noticed Holden had gone off again. With a slight shrug, she taps Hesper’s left ear with her velvety nose and then bends her neck against Lycoris again.
“Look at you!” she croons, quite like the mother she is. “The Earth has practically swallowed you whole!” Pride beams from Nyota’s starry eyes as she grins at Lycoris.
Oh, it was good to be home.
