Holden is not bothered when she creeps closer; her breath, warm and playful, divides his water and leaves nothing but sleek, dark skin beneath and he eyes the drying patches with wide eyes. Indeed, they had both been born as Wolves and so their kinship went deeper than the easy friendship of young playmates. The black yearling’s lips curled upward in delight and stayed here, his easy-going personality apparent in his relaxed shoulders and hips. He eyed her curiously, noticing her interest in him and (as any young boy would) rather enjoying the attention.
Her rambling is pleasant and he thinks, if Nyota were young, this is what she might be like. He tries (very, very hard) to remember her mother but he was only a baby when he left the Element and he really doesn’t remember any one beyond his own family and the beetle Edward who used to hang onto Renfield for dear life. “I don’t remember her, but I’m sure my mother does! She knew everybody before we left,” he says quickly, as if she knows where they’ve been and everything that had happened to cause them to leave. “Thanks for the welcome anyways! My mom’s Nyota… I think you would have been born after she got trapped in that tree, though.”
She tackles him and he laughs again, tumbling backwards with the weight of her small body. Only for a moment was she there, her forelegs bent against him, before she pushed over him like a gazelle and bounded away in several fleeting steps. He picked himself up after her, chuckling now and then (but not at her – never at her! – just because she was cute) before leaping behind her himself.
“I know so many exciting places it would make your eyes go in a thousand directions all at once, like a fly!” His tail swished irritably at the thought of it. “Well, maybe not a fly, but something with that many eyes!” He laughed then, at the sound of his own voice which had lost its edge now that he was back in the Element. “One day, you need to go on a walkabout too!”
