"As if you could kill time without injuring eternity." - - Henry David Thoreau
“Maybe so.”
His breath came in gasps as he bounded alongside her, his fiercely red coat contrasting her mottled red and black pelt.
“But I have never been afraid of the consequences of my actions.”
With that he swung away from her, his haunches coiling as he leapt over a tipped boulder and cleared across its surface. Once he scrambled to the top of the small ridge he peered around it, lifting his regal head to the wind to survey their surroundings.
She stood plaintively at his hooves, her tongue lolling and tail swaying. A triangular ear was pinned as she stared sourly up at him. Leaving Solira is bad. You love Alshain. And that painted dragon-lady (though it was obvious his love for Saphira was not shared, both by her tone of voice and her nickname for the mare) And everyone else. She said stubbornly, her cutting voice an insistent reminder that what they were doing was thoroughly disapproved of.
“Leaving? Who said I was leaving?”
He turned to look at her, leaping down from the ledge with a grunt as he landed. He picked up a steady lope, and she rolled her eyes and followed. Eventually, the rocky shore-line receded and the grass grew thicker. The bracken water was no longer scented and the taste of salt evaporated completely. He was shocked and awed by the change; she was utterly unimpressed.
They padded side-by-side to the entrance of Andarin. His mouth was wide open with wonder while hers was firmly set with predecided distaste.
“Well, we’re here.”
Great, let’s go.
