They were as yielding as they were piercing, as kind as they were cruel, each impression as meaningless as the next through no conscious effort of her own. Hers was a subtle cleverness. But for now, still quite young enough to surrender to the most fleeting of whims, she was neither clever nor subtle. His desire to go unnoticed had been the very thing to capture her interest, and now she tilted her head this way and that, increasing the angle each time until he stood precariously on an Escher-esque wall bristling with trees. Trees that hadn’t been lost in the fire, she mused. Emboldened by his furtive inspection of the world beyond the treeline, the white filly trotted purposefully toward him, every line and angle of her body seeming to advertise her awareness of his presence, denying any attempts he might make to simply vanish as her slippery father might. “You,” she said, voice ringing melodiously in a way that would have made me facepalm if she weren’t genetically predisposed to it, “no defying gravity without the proper credentials!” Needless to say, she’s far more clever than she is socially adept.
