I am a speech language pathologist assistant in the state of KY and we have to be licensed by the state. I am very proud of the job that I do. As a licensed SLPA I have to have 15 hours of continuing education a year, the same as the state requires for our SLP's. I did not attend a two year college, but a 4 yr university with a bachelor's degree in communication sciences and disorders. I admit that I don't have the clinical or knowledge base that a master's level SLP may have, but I dare say I have more practical experience with IEP's, therapy, etc. than a first year SLP in the school setting. I would love to have my master's degree, and was accepted to a graduate school upon completion of my bachelor's, but life circumstances prevented me from attending at that time. I think it is great that some states allow those of us that have a bachelor's in CSD to work with our degree. As far as pay goes, our supervisor is financially compensated for the time he spends supervising us and his license is not on the line and we aren't covered by his license but our own. We have guidelines set forth by the state that we have to follow. Sorry this is so long, but I thought some of us SLPA's needed our viewpoint explained, we are not glorified teacher's aids.
