I usually do a sample of 50 spontaneous utterances (using story retell or storybooks without words) which I tape record. I count both the percentage of total words which were intelligible as well as the percentage of utterances. An utterance is considered intelligible if the entire utterance is understood. It's a little time consuming but worth it - particularly to document progress.
