vocalic R production with nasal distortion

I've come across 2 students (one a 2nd grader and one a 5th grader) who are having issues with vocalic R production being hypernasal in quality. If I cue to open mouth slightly this improves the quality slightly about 40% of the time. Any thoughts or tricks?
