I think you need to focus on speaking with the parents about overall COMMUNICATION and how speech is just part of that. I am sure you are embedding speech into all activities, as are the other primary teachers. This, along with any sign, PECS, communication devices, choice making strategies, etc., are all part of COMMUNICATION. Put the focus on the child being able to communicate (and how he already does so) rather than the focus on speech only. This takes some pressure off of you and the parent. You may also need to educate on receptive vs. expressive, look at devices, etc.
If the issue is the parents just wanting to focus on speech, then I think you need to be honest and not only talk about what I mentioned previously, but on how each child learns differently, and that we take them where they are at and build. Is verbal speech out of the question? Maybe yes, but maybe no. It is hard to dash a parent's dreams, (and I would not go there yet) but the conversation may need to be had eventually.
