When I have inherited goals that are not apparently measurable, I develop a measure and state it when I review progress. I may develop a list of new targets(syn/ant, etc.) and then report as a % achieved when introduced and reviewed. OR you could report in terms of "opportunities."
Larely, I have wrapped Syn & Ant into a strategy goal of obtaining word meaning through word maps, The map may include blanks or bubbles or squares, etc. for : 1. guess definition in context of a given sentence from content material; 2. dictionary definition (look up in text, dictionary, online), 3. provide antonym and synonym (may also look up or thr discussion), 4. list related words, 5. write a sentence containing word, 6. Draw a representative picture w/ or without a caption. They may have to complete the map w/ 80% accuracy, with two or less adult prompts, for one content word per week for x number of weeks.
I should clarify that this is for middle school age.
Obviously we can't teach them every word def, syn/ant but we can guide them thr and help them learn a process by which they can find this info when needed OR look at it as a process to get to know a word.
I'm curious as to what others do also.
