For descriptive words, I like to play, I'm thinking of game. They describe things and the others guess. You can use a visual to guide their descriptions (there are some in materials exchange).
I've also started by drafting (with the students) lists of adjectives and adverbs9on a poster board). Sometimes I cue by descriptors for Person, Place and Thing and then by thinking of verbs and then asking HOW Q's-like How can you run-fast, quickly, slowly, awkwardly,smoothly, etc.
Then they can make up a continued/add-to story and use descriptors for each noun and verb. Let them get as crazy as they want!
