9 year old boy with perfect artic except K and G. Mom says he was in therapy at 5yo due to fronting. He was "cured" quickly. Unfortunately the K and G sounds he makes are incorrect. His voice cuts out on the G and for both the sounds I can hear what sounds like a click, with an echotype sound. The echo is of his K or G sound.
I believe he is making the sound too far back, actually down in his throat rather than with the tongue back hitting the palate. When I look in my mouth when making the k/g sounds my tongue fills the entire back of the oral cavity, and the center of my tongue blade moves up to touch my palate. When he makes it there is still a lot of room in the back of his oral cavity (although his tongue is scrunched back), when he makes the k/g the middle of his tongue back goes down toward the bottom of his mouth, the sides of the tongue blade go up slightly in response to the k/g attempt. 2 more things. When he attempts k/g his nostrils flare slightly, more so on k than g. When he pinches the nostrils closed, it sounds a little better. Finally, when he makes the ing sound it is perfect. When he says ink it sounds like inkuh- with the click sound following it. I have tried to use coarticulation using the ing withous success. Please offer any suggestions you can. Do you think he should be referred to an ENT? How would they figure this out- what procedures would they do. The family is desperate, the little boy is a very hard worker and I'm trying to help them get through this. Thank you so much!!
