He smiles and speaks to each, even though several are non-verbal and largely unresponsive. Impressed by the needs of these students and the wonderful care, respect, and education they receive from their teacher and teaching assistant, this gentleman approached his Masonic Lodge and arranged for a $1000.00 donation to the class to purchase anything we want. As communication and assistive tech needs are great in that class, the teacher asked me (the SLP) to help develop a "wish list." Today, our crossing guard friend and three of his lodge-mates came to our school--dressed in tux w/tails!--to meet the principal, teaching staff, and students in that class, and to present us with the check. The gentlemen were delighted to see the students (one even entertained them with magic tricks that even baffled the teachers!) and were very interested in augmentative communication. We will gratefully use their generous gift to purchase several communication devices and computer programs that we know will benefit the students. As a small token of our appreciation, the teacher made a colorful banner with all of the students handprints and a "thank you" message to our new friends. Today was a good day!
For the past several years we have had a kindly, grandfatherly crossing guard stationed in front of our school. Each morning he tips his hat in greeting to the teachers as they drive into the parking lot--a small gesture, but one that really brightens my morning.
