I am a graduate student working in tandem with a fellow student in the speech and language clinic on campus. One of our 9 year-old clients has an auditory processing disorder, so one of our objectives is to get the child to secure phone messages accurately. It was our initial meeting with the client. My partner left her cell phone on the table to go call it from the other room while I worked with the child. We planned to have the client pick up the phone when it rang, listen to the message, and reiterate it back with full detail. As the child and I played a game, the phone began to ring. I instructed the client to answer it telling the child, "It's for you". The client reluctantly followed my instruction. A puzzled look came over the client's face after answering the phone and the kid handed it to me, refusing to talk. I encouraged the client to listen and take the message. The kid refused. I spoke into the phone, saying "Oh, you want to speak to ---?" The woman on the other end had no idea what I was talking about. My partner's friend called at the exact moment we were to implement our activity, leaving everyone confused and laughing! It really broke the ice for the first session for us as grad clinicians and for the client!
