We went from room to room, K through grade 6, noticing the differences from grade to grade, espcially the furniture which got bigger with each grade. It took my son to notice one thing that was the same--on the top of every chalkboard was the ever-present alphabet. Pointing above the chalkboard in the sixth grade classroom, he whispered to me, "Shouldn't the kids know that by now?"
Do you ever do things automatically, without thinking why, just because it's always been done that way? I was recently reminded of my son's flash of insight that made me realize that we are all guilty of this at times.
