The mother of two challenging sons who are on the spectrum was a shining example of grace, gratitude, and collaboration. She came to every meeting with a sincere smile for everyone, and a box of donuts. She always started by thanking everyone for specific things they had done for one of the boys. Because she then listened with respect to everyone's present level reports, everyone felt very comfortable in being open and honest -- no need to sugar-coat, no feeling of threat or defensiveness on either side, just a genuine sharing, questioning, and planning together for the good of the students. I never dreaded these meetings, and always left them feeling that we all had a true and productive partnership with this parent. It was always a positive experience. I wish they were all like that!
