Hello everyone!
In reflecting back on the year I just finished
I am reminded of a great break-through I had
with one of my life skills students. This was
a child who I had been working with for two
years. In all that time she had never said one
audible word. One day in March I sat down with
her with one of these automatic "talk back"
buttons hoping she might be intrigued by
hearing the immediate playback of my voice.
I was talking and naming different colors
when all of a sudden she smiled real big and
said, "purple." Wow! Her aid was sitting at
a desk behind me and she was like, "did she
just say that?" This was one of those kodak
moments that you just want to freeze in time.
It was like a light bulb went off and since then
she has added about 5-10 more words audibly
and clearly! I say this as an encouragement
to everyone to remember that we really are in
the people business regardless of budget and
admisistrative woes and to never give up on
a child because well you never know. . .
