All I can do is just smile inside at this preschool teacher.
I am working on velars with a pre-K girl. And I promise her pre-K teacher thinks I am just a 'glorified' teacher and thinks all I do with this girl is "k" "k" "k" and get paid more than she does.
So, she has asked me how much I have gotten paid. Asked if my employer is hiring any SLPs cos she wants to apply. So, I said encouragingly, "Thats awesome, are you gonna go get a masters?"
She looked at me, baffled, and said, "You have a masters?" I nodded. SHe asked, "in social work?"
I said, "no. In speech lang pathology. You need to have at least a masters degree to practice."
On another issue with this teacher, she proudly told me she was working on the sounds with my pre-K girl. I was thrilled, because I welcome help and practice from family and teachers.
So, this teacher said she has been working on the "Q" sound and said she has been teaching the girl how to say "Q" like "quail, queue, queen." She asked me, how do you teach her how to say "Q" because this preK girl can't say it. I told her "Q" is actually not a phoneme but several phonemes together, and gave her examples that "quail" is actually a /kw/ and "queue" is more of a /kj/. And this girl can't say it because they consist of /k/ that she has difficulty with. So we are working on that. Teacher doesnt seemed convinced and tried to argue with me that "Q" is a phoneme.
I just smile.
