My son Josh had lots of mispronunciations when he was a preschooler. (Kept me busy in my "off-hours" too.) His vocabulary was much more advanced than his articulation skills were.
He called a helicopter a "happa-copper" and a calculator was a "cackle-ater." We kept our milk in the "fritta-freighter" and sometimes I sat down to play music on the "pinanio." His favorite sandwich was "pea-bobber lolly" and he even liked that green vegetable, "ba-lobilly." One of his favorite fruits was the yummy "straw-baby," and like lots of other kids, he loved "ska-betty." His uncle had a car, but in the nice weather he rode a "mo-mo-saka." Josh was fascinated by the big work machines; his favorite was the "bull-doe-doe." And he loved to squish bugs, especially "ma-keeters" and "cacka-pitters."
One of our best family stories was the time his grandmother was visiting. Josh had been up early that morning, and had already eaten breakfast. Later, he saw his grandmother coming out of the guest bedroom. Wanting to know if she'd eaten yet, he asked, "Nana! Did you have your "breast-fixed"? Poor Nana couldn't stop laughing!
One of my favorites was his nickname for his new baby brother - whose real name was Adam Alexander. To Josh, he was "Adam Alacazamder." (I should add, he was a budding magician at the time :-) Ah, sweet memories. That little boy of mine turns 21 this week! And his articulation is perfect! No surprise, his vocabulary is still amazing. He's in college, majoring in English.
