Posted by Becky on 5/2/2002, 10:02 pm I had just spent an entire afternoon talking about the first Thanksgiving - we made costumes, acted out the trip across the ocean, etc... - I was finishing up with a quick review and asked who remembered the name of the ship on which the Pilgrims traveled. One little girl promptly raised her hand and said "the Novemberflower." -Think about it- makes more sense than the Juneflower or Mayflower! She then answered my next question "What did the Pilgrims and Native Americans have?" She again answered quickly with, "A great big Feasterville!" (This was the name of the town she lived in).
I should probably save this for November, but who knows where I'll be by then! Having worked for most of my career within the Autistic Spectrum, the majority of my students are extremely literal. I try and write each incindent down, but two of my favorites are as follows:
The second story happened on picture day at school. The photographer must have been an old army drill sargent. He started to give our class a number of commands as it came time for them to have their picture taken. He said "march" "stop" "take two steps back" - everyone was fine up to this point - then - "right face" - each and every child put their right hand to their face! Fifteen years later and I can still see my very literal group and the photographers look of surprise!
