When doing evaluations, my first task is to engage the student in conversation. It makes the students feel at ease and it gives me an idea about their language abilities. I start by telling the students about myself. I want them to use my introduction as a model for their introduction. A few days ago, I was evaluating, Tony, a kindergarten boy and I gave my usual introduction. "My name is Ms. SLP. I'm the speech teacher here at XXX School. I like to read and watch TV. I like to ride my bike when the weather is nice. I have one brother and two sisters. And, I have two cats." Tony looked very sad and said, "I had a dog, but he died". I looked appropriately sad and compassionate and said, "I'm so sorry, Tony. What was your dog's name?" Very solemnly, Tony answered, "Lucky".
