My 5 year old son was trying to button his shirt and was becoming frustrated. My husband kept saying in a soft, slow voice to , "focus...focus...focus." My son continued to get more frustrated then yelled, "I'm trying to button my shirt and all you keep saying is 'focus!, focus!, focus!' and I don't know what that means! We soon recognized the benefits of direct vocabulary instruction!
