GULP! We were told to wait; a few minutes a woman came in to say that the first visit would be covered by donations that are made for just that purpose. She then took time to explain to the mother what she should do to obtain coverage that would be accepted. WHEW! When the child was taken into the exam room, she was told to select a Beanie Baby from the shelf. It was great for her to hold onto during the exams and conference with the team members. Each person who came into the room asked if she had a Beanie, made a fuss over the one she chose, and asked what it's name was. As we prepared to leave, the child walked back to the shelf to put the toy back. "Oh, no," she was told, "that's yours to keep." A person in the community donated a big supply of these toys so each child who visited the clinic could leave with a new friend! Sometimes you wonder if the check you write to a charity really makes a difference...in this case, it certainly did! Sometimes you wonder what you can do to help others...the simple donation of that Beanie was worth a million bucks to that little girl!
I had the opportunity today to accompany a young girl and her mother to a cleft palate clinic so she could be evaluated for VPI. I could go on and on about the experience of meeting with the team (all very positive), but I will share the two things that touched me the most.
