I read today that money being sent to Mexico by Mexican's living in Mexico dropped by 12 percent in August, from the same month one year ago. It was 1.9 billion this August vs 2.2 billion in August one year ago. It stated that remittances are the second largest source of foreign income after oil exports. This comes to about 24 billion a year going into the Mexican economy, and almost all of this is going in small amounts to families. I think this also has a direct result in lower tourism and travel from those north of the border. San Pancho local business derive a large source of income from this tourism and people who come here, buy property, build or remodel a house, hire workers and caretakers and spend money in local establishments. Am I correct? A question arises, what can be done, or should anything be done, to encourage business which are less reliant on tourism? If so what would those be? Or should things be done on a different level to bolster tourism, to somehow bring more people here with money to spend on lodging, gift shops, restaurants, horseback riding, birdwatching, fishing, music festivals, film festivals, etc. I am not overloaded with answers, just a few questions.
Any and all feedback could lead to some good conversations and who knows what good might even come of it?
Hope your days are peaceful.
Lorenzo
