Hello Reality,
Yes, the area floods every season, but the 250 ft. retaining wall of Mariposas creates a dam cutting the surface area of the floodplain to about 1/3 of its original size. This not only causes the water level to rise a good 2-3+ feet higher on the road than it used to be but also slows down the evaporation process (the water level does not get a chance to drop before the next rain hits.) The added depth changes the road condition from passable to impassable. There has been a half dozen vehicle "drownings" since the wall. There are locals that live there that are extremely inconvenienced including the tienda that started to take on water. The pumping of the lake was not done by Larry but by the locals on their dime to try to regain access to their homes and to try to cut down the number of mosquitoes. If anybody feels that the whining is unjustified, please look me up and I would by happy to introduce you with the people that are affected by "the puddle." In defense of Larry: He is a stand up guy that cares about the pueblo. The mentioned area was unsightly before he transformed it into, what is turning out to be a wonderful residential subdivision, Las Mariposas. I am optimistic that Larry will sit down with the Ayuntamiento and maybe Bobby Yo's vision of a storm water drainage system in the area can someday be realized.
