Judith is right. They will store whatever they can (but it isn't a long term storage solution. What they can't use they send to the blood bank in San Javier and give us a credit. Duane, unfortunately, needs O positive and we probably won't get much of that donated -- but if we don't we can "trade" what we have with the official blood bank.
I think, however the best part about this is that the hospital will now have a chance to meet more people who are willing donors. If they do it right and keep our blood type on record they might lose some of the dependency they have on the blood bank and be able to respond quicker to emergencies right here. They claim we can only give 4 times a year -- I say, sign me up! I'll give whenever I can and hope others will too. Please do talk to Maria Elena -- if you get better information let us all know so we can make this work not just for the immediate needs of Duane and his family, but for all the people of San Pancho and surrounding communities

: I was once a recipient for blood in a Mexican
: hospital. The way donating was explained to
: me was that you donate any type blood and it
: kind of entitles you to a "credit"
: on receiving blood when you need it. You
: replace the blood you receive by finding
: donors with any RH type . . . eventually
: there will be someone who needs your type,
: and you may draw on the blood bank and
: receive whatever type matches your body.
: What they try to do is keep a good supply of
: all types. If you receive six transfusions,
: they like you to find six donors of any RH
: to replenish six bags of blood, thereby
: keeping the bloodbank full and ready for
: someone else's needs. If the blood that is
: donated happens to be the specific RH that
: is needed for Duane, all the better!

: " Unfortunately, San Pancho doesn't
: have
: a blood bank "
:
: Then that brings up another question:
: What is happening to the blood that is being
: donated for
: Duane that does NOT match his blood type?
: I'm not being negative here, just trying to
: work my way through to the logical answer
: for giving. Mayby someone can talk to Dra
: Maria Elena and if not, Trish can talk to
: her after we return from Semana Santa.

: I agree, John. I have tried to give blood
: at
: the hospital and was turned away. kelly
: Trainer may have opened the door so that we
: can all get on a regular schedule to do
: this. Those of us who can give -- well,
: we should. How many ambulances do we have
: to see screaming through town to realize
: that human beings need that one precious
: gift that we can easily give.
:
: Unfortunately, San Pancho doesn't have a
: blood bank where they can store blood, but
: it would be nice if hey had us all typed and
: our phone numbers so we can be contacted
: when they need us.
:
: Thanks for posting this information.

: Our prayers are with Glenda and Duane during
: this time of crisis.
:
: Most of the American community does not
: realize that there must always be a special
: decision made for non-Mexicans to give
: blood.
:
: One might also hope that the same effort be
: given to keeping this practice
: "alive" for ALL residents of San
: Pancho and those that are in need at our
: hospital. Truely, the "gift of
: life", not a gift for credit.

: One of our neighbors is in serious need of
: blood. The hospital (at first) refused to
: take donations from the American Community.
: Glenda, the patient's wife, went to the
: American Consulate who met with the Director
: and they have amended their policy to allow
: anyone to donate.
:
: Below are the requirments to give. If you
: can help -- please, please do so. Not only
: can we save Duane's life -- we might be able
: to save a lot of people's lives by starting
: a practice of giving.
:
: Thank you.
:
: IF YOU CAN DONATE, PLEASE CALL 258-4488.
: WE ARE TRYING TO SCHEDULE EVERYONE FOR NEXT
: MONDAY AND TUESDAY.

: SAVES LIVES.
:
: DONATE TODAY AND SAVE A LIFE; TOMORROW IT
: MAY BE YOUR LIFE WE ARE TRYING TO SAVE.
:
: THE BLOOD BANK RESERVES THE RIGHT TO ACCEPT
: OR DENY WHOMEVER PRESENTS THEMSELVES FOR
: DONATION IF THEY DO NOT MEET THE MINIMUM
: REQUIREMENTS IN THE GENERAL LAY OF HEALTH OF
: MEXICO.
