my wife and i have made that drive several times and have found it to be easy as well as scenic. we have found that timing is important, you don't want arrive friday afternoon and try to drive accross town in rush hour traffic. and you really don't want to try that drive at night!
if your timing is right the drive a beautiful and the roads are good, at least toll road is well kept and well marked and relatively smooth. there are many places to stop and get gas, visit facilities and eat if you are so inclined.
i suggest getting a map atlas such as "guia roji" which is updated regularly and available on line for a reasonable price. it includes mileage between towns, cuota stations (toll boothes) amount of toll, location of gas and services etc. be sure to have pesos as the toll boothes don't accept anything but cash.
be sure to keep your toll reciepts as they are your proof of insurance for that section of the toll road. the price of your toll includes a portion for insurance.
we have found that the airfare savings by flying into gdl pays for our rental car. so, time your trip and get a good map and have fun.
