Posted by Pete on June 1, 2005, 13:17:04, in reply to "Hold the Presses!! Wolfville 8 Miler Newsflash!" just a quick update to give a more precise description of the course, as we went out and measured it last night. The course will start on the track at Raymond field and go out the north (back) end of the field, turning right onto an Acadia University service road. You will run along this service road until you come to Elm Avenue. You'll cross Elm and turn right, and then make a quick left onto Front Street (the street with the liquor store). You'll run maybe 400m along Front until you come to a crusher dust walking path which runs between the railroad tracks and Tim Hortons. There's a bit of a guardrail/fence that you'll have to zigzag around. This crusher dust trail goes maybe 2-300 m until it ends at the dirt access road which leads you onto the dyke roads. Here you will make a sharp left and run past the closed vehicle gate (there is room to run by to the left, in single file). At this point, you're on the dyke roads (called Old Dyke Lane). You will stay on this road, keeping the dyke (the hill to your left) beside you until you come to the end of the dyke road. Old Dyke Lane makes a number of turns, and there are a couple of intersections with possible turns, but you will always keep the dyke (hill) on your left (on the way out). When you get to the end of the dyke road, you will turn right onto a paved road and run maybe a quarter or third of a mile to the turnaround point. After you've turned around, go back exactly the way you came, and finish inside Raymond Field at Acadia. The route is almost entirely flat, with three or four minor exceptions. There is a gradual drop as soon as you get onto Old Dyke Lane. You'll run up this drop on the way back. There is a place where the road goes on top of the dyke and back down (about 15 feet up/down), just before the 3 mile mark. You'll go up and down twice (out and back in). At the end of the dyke, the road once again rises (15 feet) onto the top of the dyke. The biggest "hill," though, is just before the turnaround point, on the paved road. Here you'll find a gradual rise that goes up and down maybe 30 feet, and you'll run up and down the hill twice. The dyke road is single lane, and I've already mentioned there are some potholes. It is very easily passable at a brisk (racing) pace in single file. Make sure you're looking where you go, and you should be fine. Please remember, though, that you'll be coming back along the same single lane that you go out on, so leave room for the lead runners to come back the other way. That's the course. We hope you come out and enjoy it. Weather should be great (cross your fingers). Remember, you'll likely never run a flatter race in Nova Scotia than this one.
