While I appreciate that some runners like to listen to music while they run I hotly debate that they "need" music in order to run. Whether during training or during an actual race one needs to keep their wits about themself at all times which is hard to do when you're focused on music versus running and things going on around you. Again a point that some have made which seems to be missed by others is that its not just about YOU! Remember that you're also placing others at risk in order to satisfy your "need" and yes it might be better that you stay home and listen to your music instead of running. Its an issue of respect for others in my mind that we should be focused on instead of simply doing what satisfies ourseleves. Its the same issue that most jurisdictions have finally come to accept with regards to using cell phones while driving... user inattention. I believe that what it is going to take to change this self-serving attitude is for a race director/official to disquailify or to take those who choose not to follow race rules off the course for the message to sink in. It might sound harsh but we're talking about health and safety here! Just my 10 cents on the issue. Check Run NB's Forum for comments regarding this same issue in your sister Province.
