I ALWAYS wear my iPod when training. It's a great distraction and gives me something to listen to other than my own footsteps and breathing. I've also worn them for a couple of half and full marathons due to the potential for boredom/lonilness at some of these events. There are some smaller races where you'll find yourself alone on the course for long periods of time and without any spectators to cheer you on.
However, I don't think it's prudent to allow them in races for one important reason.....safety. You are putting yourself and others at risk. I fear that, eventually, an accident will occur involving someone wearing an iPod or some other electrical device. You're simply not fully aware of your surroundings when being distracted. Even on training runs, I've been occasionally startled by a passing vehicle. As much as I love to run to music, I do worry about the liability to race directors and the potential hazard that we're creating for them.
