The Tampin Combo

I was in the Royal Artillery in Malaya for two years from 1957. I was attached to the Gurkha’s in Negri Sembelan at Tampin village. I was a co-founder of a Skiffle Group called ‘The Tampin Combo’. We formed for a Christmas NAFFI party. There were five or six of us. The first gig was a total success and the place went mad for us. We were invited by the then chief of police to play at different police stations. We were also asked to play at various events such as weddings, social events, and musical appreciation nights around Malaya. We also played at SAS camps as far away as Penang Island up on the Thailand border. We always travelled by Army lorries and would get quite inebriated by the time we got back to Tampin camp. The 48th Field Regiment was disbanded in 1959 and we were all shipped back to Blighty and I went Edinburgh in Scotland. I left the army in 1959. I would love to hear from any of the Skiffle group to see how good my memory of those heady days is.
