When Arafat was alive he noted the first suicidal destructor recorded was Samson, a Jew, when he destroyed the temple and himself to rid its evil. http://www.netanyahu.org/poscom.html Very, very parallel, if you ask me, and inextricable from Middle Eastern or any society. You can even point to Jesus knowing his death was imminent and that he would be betrayed but dying for all of our sins anyway. Zealotry will probably parallel this ideology for a long time, perhaps for the rest of our history. Here's an interesting article I found: http://fistfulofeuros.net/archives/001715.php The article references this excellent publication by the RAND Corporation which may be found at the following (see Bruce Hoffman's article on page 29) http://www.rand.org/pubs/conf_proceedings/2005/RAND_CF212.pdf According to the Hoffman chapter, suicide bombing "hardly existed" in the 1970s, seemingly meaning it existed but wasn't popular. It jumped to an average of 2.5 a year in the 1990s. Thank you for your time, Iceburn
