Posted by SleepingHare on 4/19/2003, 3:34 am It seems pretty clear that most Arab commentators are a bunch of liars. They wanted Iraqis to die to keep a dictator in power under the guise of anti-imperialism. Now they want the US to leave quickly so the Iraqis can have "real" democracy. It sounds like their concern isn't for the Iraqi people. Their nightmare is that the Americans might just succeed in creating a liberal-democratic Iraq if they stick around long enough. That may be next to impossible, but for the sake of the Arab world I'll keep my fingers crossed. http://www.memri.org/bin/opener_latest.cgi?ID=SR1403

I found this broad collection of newspaper responses insightful. The "Saudi Daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat" actually seemed to be cheering the demise of Pan-Arabism. Good riddance, I say. Too bad about most of the rest of the Arab press.
