Posted by Allen Leading up to the Battle of Kasserine Pass(which was the culmination of an 85 mile American retreat) Atkinson relates the thoughts of one of Rommel's subordinates, Fritz Krause, in early '43, that Rommel "gave the impression of a broken man. We hardly recognized him." Atkinson continues, "Only in the past few days had he showed renewed signs of agression; his lieutenants hoped that the greening hills of Tunisia would lift him from his torpor. But the real tonic for the old fox was the scent of fresh prey from beyond the Eastern Dorsal: the Americans."

I'm almost finished with Rick Atkinson's "An Army at Dawn", which just won the Pulitzer for history. I was a bit reluctant to start it, but one fifth of it is bibliography, index, sources and such - and it's a quick read. It's practically a day-by-day(in parts, hour-by-hour) recounting of the war in North Africa.
