But surely, the people in those countires which are comprised of the former European colonies would make a conscious decision to avoid all that? And if they content themselves to settle for only 100 years of bloodshed to straighten out their border questions, is anything gained by waiting another 10 or 20 years to begin the process? Or would that be worse? One would hope that they would look at Western Civilization both as a goal to be reached and an example of how NOT to reach it. Just skip over the slaughter entirely.

There was a fellow on the radio the other day who thought that the situation in post-war Iraq would resemble that of Yugoslavia in the '90s, that an iron-fisted dictatorship is the only way to hold together a country with unnatural borders.
