Bush should have focused only on the threat WMD posed (including the risk of terrorists acquiring them) and on Saddam's violations of a treaty he signed to eliminate his WMD. By avoiding weak claims of a link to al-Qaida and morally questionable arguments about a war to further America's oil interests the Bush administration could have won the public opinion war.

You are describing the real bungling of the build-up to the Iraq war. The Bush Administration has failed to make it clear why this war needs to be fought. With all the confusing explanations (some pathetically weak like a link to al-Qaida) Bush has handed a void to anyone who wants to fill it with a consistent and believable explanation. The radical left has stepped in with the oil explanation. With other sources repeating Bush's confusing message, there is only one plausible source for people to believe.
