An evening with Terry Shulman by Rachel
http://www.myspace.com/originalrachelThis is my first blog and I wanted to write it as nobody gets to hear
Terry's story. As what Terry sees and experiences on a Thursday night
at the Barn is different to that of an audience member, performer or
host. Of course I am not Terry, merely his apprentice, so I don't
know exactly what he thinks or feels, especially as he is a man of
few words. But he has begun to share with me his thoughts over the
past couple of weeks as we have formed a little drummers bond, if you
will.
He usually gives me a sort of nod when he thinks it's the right time
for me to play the drums. Sometimes he stays with me for a few songs
lending me a single drum and symbol but on other occasions (like last
night) he leaves me to my own devices. I never know quite what he's
going to do but usually I get time on my own and time with him in
equal measure. As the weeks have pasted he appears to be trusting me
more therefore allowing me to play for quite a few sets alone.
Although I enjoy being on 'main drums' as he calls them, my favourite
time is when I play alongside him. His characteristic and eccentric
ways make me giggle and he seems to like making me laugh. As I said
before, he is a man of few words and I'm getting used to his single-
worded orders. For example when he says 'Up!' it means stop talking
or drinking and play the drums. More obvious ones are 'Bar'
and 'Piss'. He does occasionally string the odd sentence together,
these are usually in the realm of 'They want drums?' or 'What music
they play?' . He did shock me last night though with this stunning
piece of dialogue: 'I don't care if they want drums or not cos
they're getting them. In fact, they're going to get two drummers!'. I
then puffed my chest out and looked all proud. As he referred to me
as a drummer!!! Up until then, I thought he just thought I was a
silly girl who nicked his drums given half the chance.
I recently discovered that he also expects me to help him clear his
drums away at the end of the night and demands to know of my
whereabouts throughout the evening. This, along with the fact that I
now have my own drum sticks and he is getting 'us' a new drum next
week, all adds to my status as his apprentice and secondary drummer.
Anyway, I thought I would tell you this ongoing tale of Terry and I
and our blossoming friendship. We are there every week in the corner,
supporting whoever needs us, sitting in what I believe are the best
seats in the place, side by side, sharing a drum kit.
Terry never takes the spotlight, he's never the life and soul of the
party and will not take any compliments or recognition for his
drumming talent. Yet The Barn would seem empty without him. I thought
I would write this for him. to tell everyone just a little bit more
about this enigmatic, ant-making, odd people-painting drum-playing
man.
Thanks for reading.
