If you came to the Barn tonight you could have witnessed a Carboard
Man, some Irish metaphysical poetry, some manic air guitar, dancing
on tables, a raffle done to a grand scale that possibly took the
concept too far
, heckle city as someone bravely tries to take
the piss out of Pompey football team (!!), a performer that came from
the past and shocked everyone with the reinvention of Karaoke and the
now familiar noise of a room full of people making werewolf
impressions.
- that's tonight in a nutshell.
In more detail, it would be more like:
Lee Spragg started the night off with a compelling set of originals
and covers - the originals nicely distinctive personal songs and the
covers chosen from a man with a good taste in music!
I particularly like his version of Hallelujah, I Don't Want to Row
and "Wherever you will go" which had Lee singing VERY low indeed!
It has to be said though, I found it quite entertaining just watching
him perform anyway - he was completely doing it on his terms -
watching the audience to the point of distraction LOL, sometimes
deciding not to put his mouth near the mic - so there was a "car
going past" effect sometimes LOL - and as I recall a heckle from his
Mum LOL
Dave Loughran followed- a record producer with a big voice and a
sense of control over his material. Enjoyed his set, especially the
encore called "Mr Dreamer".
Open Mic included:
Jack Courtney - ahhhh Jack, it's great watching you do Soul Man -
especially when you fill the whole floor with the "Soul Walk" -
classic - but when you did "Don't Stop me Now" I was totally LOVING
the energy you attacked the song with, the blazing air guitar solo
you burst into, and the way you SHOUTED "NOW!!!!!!" to the two girls
to do the "ooh ooh oohs" - brilliant.
Pompey Birds - great to hear new material - this time it was Pink -
nice choice!
Maxwell - the Razorlight song in particular was really strong. His
posse was pretty huge too which was impressive.
James - hugely underated (I want to see James do an hour), he
performed "Old Town" (which I loved) and "Sensitive Man" (another
good one)
Leigh was very cheeky again - telling the audience to shut up
(someone was requesting Jolene again! LOL) - and in the middle
of "Crazy" she had an "I hate this" face on - and said through the
guitar and at the mic so everyone could hear it, "this is such a
BORING song" LOL - then she watched the angelic voices of me and Rich
singing to her "Me and You against the World" - classic.
Sam sung a spiritual called "O, Sister" * then sang his own song
about the scramble for the centre ground in politics (I thought this
song was bloody brilliant - and I want it)
Rory - or a cardboard replica of Rory - gave us a long overdue fix of
the Cardboard Song - this time with the invented words being mostly
courtesy of me, Rich and Rachel LOL - then Werewolves of London had
the entire room howling like there was no tomorrow...
The raffle was problematic this week I thought - too many layers of
vocals, too many elements to integrate. What does everyone else
think? - was it better with the more subtle jazz that appeared on the
2nd one (and after).
Karaoke John WAS Elton John - then turned into an animated Marti
Pellow (in which he actually sang "yeah baby!" - why I have no idea
but it was another classic moment.
"Smooth" Jay and "Irish" Sam followed - with Sam playing fantastic
(and "Smooth "Jay.....I gotta put ahold on this for a second...I
can't keep my etes open.....
(a day passes while I recover......)
Lee and Dave's night becomes a rock n roll frenzy!!
So.....how did a simple night of Lee Spragg and Dave Loughran's
songwriting talents transform into "Nick and Laurie's Rock n Roll
Jambouree!!"??
- was it Jack's air guitar that sent the evening on a different
direction?
- was it the huge creative force that is Karaoke John, at once
serenading us and scolding us with his perfect diction....?
- was it the great lead guitar skills of Irish Sam, beautifully
assisting Jay on the spur of the moment....?
- was it Rory, dressed as a cardboard box, singing "Werewolves of
London", feeling sufficiently hidden to include Zevonesque ad-
libs!.....?
- or was it just alcohol?
Whatever the reason, after Jay, Dirty Hippy, Rich, Lauren and me,
Laurie brought the evening to a close with a mini-gig (duetting -
which was probably a big surprise to him - with Nick thoughout).
Dirty Hippy chose a song I didn't know - but really liked - to start
his set, which had one of those simple but really dramatic 2 note
rundowns (look at my technical knowhow there...) - and he followed
that with the Levellers song "Carry Me", in tribute to his success at
the Levellers festival with Hobo Jones. Dirty Hippy's gigs as part of
Hobo Jones are always a success but now the Levellers have seen it
for themsleves and were raving about them!!! yay!!!!!! - well done
mate! - you deserve it!
Apparently, Hobo Jones may be coming back to the Barn soon.....so
grab your sink and fish slice as you leave the house just in case....
Lauren was next up......
Two words.
Wow - and wow!
Lauren managed to obliterate any Karaoke cynicism with her powerful,
soulful voice. She knew exactly how to sing the songs, looked like
she was really into it and completely captivated the audience. She
gave us a defiant "Hand in my pocket" and a sexy "Son of a preacher
man". Brilliant - absolutely brilliant.
Rich was next - and he started with a tribute to me mate Rach - which
is nice....she had been waiting....lol....a lovely song
called "Bright Smile Dark Eyes" - then announced "and now for
something special".....Keisha and Sian stood up behind him and danced
while he belted out a cracking version of Liberty X's "Just a little
bit more" - excellent!!
RICH IS PLAYING THE FIRST HOUR NEXT WEEK AT THE BARN!!!
- GET THERE EARLY AS HIS FIRST SONGS WILL BE AS GOOD HIS LAST ONES!
lol
Then it was me.....I had a great time of course, but ended up doing
neither of the songs I was gonna do LOL
- due to my next mission to learn the last three songs I wrote, I was
going to play the last two songs I learned - which were both covers.
These were the John Denver song "You say the battle is over" - a song
I love about how we treat animals - and the song that knocks me for 6
whenever I hear Phil Ochs's version - "When i'm gone" - I was
intending to play those....
I had someone, before I played, say some really lovely things about
my version of "World Turned Upside Down" (thanks again) so thought
i'd play it as a thanks for the compliment.
Then once i'd done that, everyone was shouting for Machismo again LOL
I don't think Nick wanted me to play it though, as he pulled the plug
out before I finished - the naughty fella. Apparently he was looking
forward to Chris Ricketts so much he wanted me to get off. LOL
Chis did two excellent songs - but for some reason thought it would
be wise to slag off Pompey football team! LOL - he got heckled.....
(not by me of course)
Then Nick asked Laurie to accompany him on his journey through his
rock n roll collection. Laurie obliged, there was many songs, many
smiles, many voices singing along, but not many chords. Jack and
Keisha danced on a table- Nick wouldn't stop, dogs poured into the
pub next door....(that last one isn't true)
A great night full of drunken misbehviour and great songs.
I need to rest now.
Gareth
p.s. don't forget Rich's hour next week.
