a week without Nick at the Barn.... Well another week without Nick - and a raffle that almost didn't happen...
Irish Sam did a fantastic first hour, with a feel and atmosphere that took me back to the folk circuit I played in the 90s - thanks for that nostalgia is a powerful thing - and you would have gone down a storm in the clubs I played in then.....
- I especialy liked the song you did when you talked about an "autobahn" (I think) - that was a cool song with a lovely melody that suited your voice loads - you really knew generally how to use the distintive voice you have. Nice one.
Next up, the main band "The Levels" had internal problems apparently so we got a set from just one Level. He apologised when he started and said he'd do a shorter set as he was without his band.
- which freed us up organising the open mic bit! LOL
Most people did three songs - which seemed to work well - we still finished earlier than we normaly do (although the new bar staff aren't quite as laid back as Kev was about when we finish)
Lee was in merry form last night - joining in with Rory's Werewolves of London, singing along to almost everything the performers did and taking me down with an expert tackle in the social room. LOL. He also gave us one of his best performances for ages - Goo Goo Dolls "Iris" really suits him!!! - brilliant.
Karoke John had trouble with his band this week - with the band starting the song at a funny place and John wondering what the hell was going on! LOL - they need to have a band meeting!
Lorry gave us more rock n roll - it was odd being the compere for him though - he looked at me with an "amazed" face when I double checked if he'd done 3 and asked for another round of applause for him - I think that is his natural expression - but it was a bit scary LOL - great set as usual though (I love it when he does Something Else - the way he says "Somethuuu uuuuur" classic)
James did his usual lovely "Drugs don't work" - Delta Elemental gave us there ornamental metal, with Steve giving a large solo at the end of the 2nd track. Chris Ricketts did his Essential Blues song he did a couple of weeks back - then surprised me with dong "Teenage Kicks" - which went down well with everyone singing along.
- which leaves me with the highlight of the night (easily)
RICH!!!!!
He gave us a Paolo Nutini song, afer reprising the Sugababes while Steve and Helen were setting up - and then gave us a FANTASTIC performance of Tenacious D's "Tribute".
- everyone loved it! - all of us singing along really loud and laughing at the voices Rich was doing, even down to the snort that the devil does during the song - classic LOL Rich was laughing too - it was obvious that he was loving it too. Thanks to Rachel for suggesting he did it!
(also thanks to Ali and Rachel for doing the raffle selling - once we had felt there was enough people in the club to do the raffle! - very quiet at first this week)
I did Slogan Song with Bad playing bass - that was great - Brad had said he'd played along to the CD - but we hadn't met, so it was a bit scary for us both LOL - but couldn't have gone better - he really is a sensitive bass player with a good ear for what is needed - really enjoyed that - thanks Brad!!
- then I did Machismo, as people were shouting it - then attempted something we'll be performing on Sunday in Tithcfield (me and Ritchie that is) - a John Denver song about the environment and animal welfare that we love. It went wrong LOL - but I thought it might so I wasn't gutted, it was a test to tell myself to keep working on it until Sunday (the big gig) LOL
Another great night though, and we got through another one without Nick!!! Fingers crossed for next week!
