Nick's back! - and another party was had by all...(part one)
Current mood: busy
Last week saw the return of the wandering compere - he may have been pissed when he got there this week LOL - he was certainly proud of his "designated drunk" t-shirt, he mentioned it about 20 times through the night LOL
Leigh was first up and she gave us a beautiful performance, as expected, with her looking very relaxed in the hot seat - when you have a whole hour you can get quite comfy up there! - it was a wonderful mix of songs though, with her own songs being possibly the strongest part of the set (Me and you against the world my fave) - but she amazed everyone with her performance of Gnarls Berkeley's "Crazy" (no idea of the spelling of the group name and I can't look it up at the mo....) - fantastic version of it, she made it her own.
Nick asked her to reprise it for his daughter as it was her fave song - and she nailed it again the second time. She finished, reluctantly, with her beautiful version of Jolene - although she changed the words to "Jeffrey" and seemed to regret that half way through the song LOL - brilliant though.
Can't wait for her next hour!
Leptany were up next for the main hour - and they scattered their set with lots of Foo Fighters stuff and their own stuff I think - interesting youngf band, with a strong lead singer (who did some of it on his own)
The open mic was next....(see part two, when I get home from work)
part two!
So the open mic night?
Was it special?? - of course it was!!
I will list the reasons why it was special: (and forget something no doubt)
- first off I have to commend Rich for his stunning version of Sugababes "Push the button" - I thought went well above what could have been meraly a "dare"
and was actually a sensitive, musical, "sexy"
rendition of a song that was probably not intended for one man and his acoustic - but sounded like it that night!
- John gave us an emotional "Bridge over troubled water" with the crowd singing along like they were part of a family get together (as happens so often in the Barn)
- James was a star again, with his pixie dancing and his fantastic performance - the first song - his song - was stunning I thought - I doubt he realises how much I like his voice - and style. He aided Rory (Conrad) with his tambourine too, as Rory (Conrad) gave us another reminder of how great Warren Zevon was - and gave us a new song he'd written about not being appreciated when he's trying to help out...great stuff...
- I performed the Phil Ochs song I had been learning - and played Brilliant Fire, with an introduction that mentioned that I was gonna play it as Leigh hadn't heard it live yet - then mentioning that she had gone anyway so my motivation for playing it was pointless LOL - still, enjoyed it anyway...
- I got to play with the Jay and Brad combo in an unrehearsed version of Wish You Were Here - where I went as far as the scat bit at the end LOL
- Maxwell setlled into his rock n roll posture for his loose performances - this guy should keep playing purely based on his look and the way he stands when he plays - I need to make a request for Tricia to take a photo of him some time - I think it's classic, the way he stands in front of the mic...
- Andy Muscat....ahhhh Andy Muscat.....we must have had the raffle after Andy....he is soooo good...he gave us his one man rock n roll band version of "Valerie" by the Zutons and "Dani California" by RHCP - brilliant.
- the Pompey Birds were back! They gave us two songs last week! - and at some points they were REALLY getting into it! - Jack was there too to start the open mic with some Elvis.
Chris did two great songs - my favourite of which was the Essential Blues, which he said he wrote after being inspired by Nina Simone - it mentioned lots of real grievances - it was a fully formed protest song that he can be very proud of.
Have I forgotten someone?
A bloody great night again of course...
- and the day after tomorrow we're off again! (this time I will be performing with Ritchie)
Tomorrow I go to the studio to record my album.
Wish me luck!
