Well an eventful night in the old Milton Barn...- so this week it was Hobo Jones and the Junkyard Dogs. - because of this the entire night was like one huge party - the atmosphere was electric (in a skiffle sort of way).
Hobo Jones (and the JD) were fantastic - really funny, completely had the audience in the palm of their hand, reeling off song after song with inventiveness and a kind of mad preformance ethic - truly was the definition of how to play to a crowd. We were all shouting, singing along, laughing, and joining in.
On one occasion joining in meant the band handing around the contents of a box of kitchen "things" for the audience to hit - and during "Mama don't allow" the audience (and i think it was everyone! LOL) hit things like crazy - spoons, trays (me), pans, pots, plates, etc - we even did a solo - although that didn't match the kazoo solo that Del played in that song - it was truly emotional.
Thw washboard was played with gusto (I bet you don't see that word very often - just shows you someone should edit my reviews) - and Hobo Jones led the band pretty faultlessly. It was a riot. Green Day's "American Idiot" was classically skiffled up like on their myspace page - my favourite was "What shall we do with the drunken sailor" - maybe that's because i'm from Portsmouth, maybe it's because I have known drunken sailors, or maybe it's because i'm often up "earliiii in the morning" - or MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE IT WAS BRILLIANT!!!! lol
- so that leaves the rest of the evening...
James did his beautiful "Purple and Black" again - I love that tune - i'm not sure if he realises how good that track is - beautful instrumental.
Leigh basically stole the open mic spot as far as I'm concerned with something she's done before of her own that I think is absolutely brilliant (must find out what its called) and a gorgeous (faultless) version of Parton's "Jolene" - she is sooooo good - and apparently she hasn't recorded anything yet - crazy.
Rory had a band! - well I say a band....Nick and James sang Werewolves of London and the Cardboard song with him - and it was hilarious - the Cardboard Song is a great moment in any open mic club - he gets the people there to write some of the lines (mine was the pineapple line) - nick sang his line - cheeky!
Becky did one of her own and Green Day's "Time of your life" - which got a good reaction.
Lee - ahhhh Lee's voice is so soulful...he did what I think was Five for fighting's "Superman" but I may be wrong...bloody good though whatever it was.
Helen and Simon gave us their customary metal moments - with James providing headbanging and growls...
Jennifer returned after last week with more of her great voice - and Nick made everyone come into the main room to hear her - quite rightly - (Nick was enraged...) - and she did a great set including a Ben Harper song!! yay!!!
Jay got Brad with him again for "You" which was cool -I know Brad would have wanted that - and a new guy (to me) Colin did a great set near the end too.
I was supposed to play with the two Ritchies - I accidentally put one of them in a box and made him disappear - leaving me and Ritchie Rizaun to change our set on the spot, after looking for our missing member (ooer!)
Very odd....
Hobo Jones came back on to close the night on a party note - and gave us a lovely version of the Levellers "Boatman" (love that song)
Another classic evening with the added inclusion of musical tramps!
(Nick has photos on his myspace page too - i'm the one behind the big tray! LOL)
