Goffman and a million others... Okay - this is gonna be long again, as Nick had to change the rules a bit - with the stampede for open mic spots! LOL
Goffman was the first hour main act - and they were absolutely brilliant!
- I've never seen them before but they were really tight, versatile in their style and playing as one massive power machine - three people locked in a tight, funky, BIG sound - the guy sitting next to me said they sounded like they could play anything - and I agree.
- always nice to see singing drummers too - the drummer was providing great harmonies - while smacking the hell out of the kit.
(I won't ignore the busy basslines or well thought out guitar solos provided by the other two - they really knew their songs - letting them "breathe" at times, before the blistering soloing - nice one!)
So - that said - there were 19 other people playing too! LOL
Nick had a hard time standing in front of the blackboard rubbing names out and rearranging them, slipping the raffle in etc - then resorting to telling everyone that it's just one song each. It had to be done - somehow he managed to get everyone in - part of the deal was Nick asking everyone to stand guard if they're next to limit the waiting time.
I had some of my own waiting time! LOL - my band didn't turn up...
I say that....they did turn up but after a bit of messing about - with my first slot being moved - thanks to the generous offer of Paul Vinton saying he'll swap (thanks Paul mate) so I can still play with the other two - but of course on the second call out - they still weren't there.
(someone let them down who was bringing them to the Barn - and the guy who was helping them out of that situation wasn't much better...)
So I played on my own - which i'm used to of course.
- and they turned up while I was playing LOL
Nick noticed they had turned up and put us on after Jay did his fantastic rendition of that song that goes "it's you, and the things you do to me, that make me love you, now i'm living in ecstacy" - that one.
We had a fantastic response and played encores! - ended up with "Everybody's talking", "You don't have to cry", "Rocking in the free world" and "Love the one you're with."
Loads of new guys it seems that night!
Notable highlights on the newbie front is:
- Jenny who did an absolutely brilliant "Black horse and the cherry tree" - I had a grin that spread across my face - her voice was strong (and just right for that song) and the backing by her mate on guitar was strong too.
- Martin and Riz - who did a good track with nice harmonies - I think it may have been their own...
- Small Town City Boy - he was really good - sounded like Stereophonics.
- Lacey - lovely version of Lisa Loeb's "Stay". Nice.
The usual suspects were there too - Rory, Jon, Jay, Del, Paul Vinton (thanks again!), Lee (Time of our lives), Leigh (yay!), Dave (in much more serious mood this week - did he read my blog???? LOL), James (I miss his voice - he did another instrumental), Tom (Nothing ever happens - a track i've almost done myself).
Nick hit his head on the mic (don't ask)
Romain went "whoo-hoo" really strangely when Del (Dirty Hippy) played "Sympanthy for the devil" - she's okay now I think....
Simon did a monstrous metal freakout - loudest thing i've heard in the club I think - which Nick followed with "did you write that yourself?" - he said "yeah" - Nick said "bad day?" LOL - fantastic!
Helen followed the metal with some piano led Nightwishesque vocals - rather than the guitar backing she usually uses.
Paul said to me when he came in that he thought tonight may be a night where everyone was brilliant - he wasn't far wrong.
Classic.
Gareth.
p.s. anyone reading this who hasn't gone yet and can, Dirty Hippy is the first hour next week with his skiffle band and I reckon it's gonna be amazing.
