where's my notes part 2!! Okay - first thing first - my nephew made his international debut last night at the open mic club - and I was one proud Uncle Gareth!!!!!!
George did two of his OWN songs
- and showed enormous promise, he didn't seem phased by the audience either! George's lyrics were cool - he's got a animal rights/environmentalist take on lyric writing which I think is wonderful (must share genes or something). Great stuff though, can't wait to see how the next few performances build on this one last night!
Ray Philpot appeared last night, a face me and Ali was sure we had seen a few times at the Railway - he got us singing Sweet Caroline (with Nick on another mic of course LOL).
Before I try and somehow give you an impression of what happened when Dave appeared, I should try and say something about what I played - I did "Soil" which is my song about flora maintenance - and Steve Earle's "Billy Austin" - it was a powerful experience doing it again, as it is such a powerful song, but not sure how it went down - songs like that it's not always apparent. - glad I did it though, I stressed it was Steve Earle's, in case anyone wanted to investigate as the man is such a great songwriter and now such an activist.
So.....Dave.....
Well it appeared at first that he was going to be a blues guy, doing blues songs, with a bluesy feel. He started with a nice, meaty version of Muddy Waters' "Hoochie Coochie Man" - with Matt (again - see part one of blog) on bass - it was really good.
Then something happened - i'm not sure if it was just comedy value, if Dave suddenly had a musical "episode", the medication wore off and his depression returned and he thought "well there's no point anyway so i'm just gonna go crazy" - or if he saw his mum at the back of the room and thought he'd show off a bit.
- either way (and I think it was comedy genius to be fair) what happened during the 2nd track is one of those live moments I might not ever forget.
(please come back Dave T)
He started with the Stones "you can't always get what you want" - with Matt finding the bassline quickly and efficiently. Then, after what seemed like a normal song length, he started singing the words to "Walk on the wild side" - the song continued with the audience sing the "do do do"s in the appropriate place (prompted by Nick) - then there was an enormous guitar solo (that was more interesting and proficient than many solos you hear generally) and it seems like he was going to end the song - Nick was asking him to appease the audience with some more "and the coloured girls go" bits - and Dave seriously looked like he didn't understand what he was saying - he was just glaring at him, while playing the chords. Matt was playing along wondering what was gonna happen next - then suddenly he started SHOUTING the "do's" - this went on for a while, then he did a kind of mad, loud, speaking in tongues, tongue flipping exercise that had us laughing, confused and hiding under the table - for AGES! - and it seemed to die down.....then he started singing the Stones song again (at which point I did the biggest laugh out loud i've done for ages) - and this mammoth performance was then ended with him screaming the last 3 words of the chorus to interrupt Nick's every attempt to get us to applaud him.
Just imagine it if you can (you can't) - Nick is trying to speak, Dave is going "WHAT YOU NEEEEEEEED!!!!!!!!" really loud to interrupt him, with the chords coming in - about 5 times. He laughed, Nick laughed, we laughed and then of course.....someone had to follow him!!!!!
LOL
(LOL doesn't do it justice - pure comedy.)
- p.s. Go George!!!
