Reunions, siblings and wild sides... I warn you - this is gonna be a long one! - last night so much happened at the Barn - luckily me and my wife were taking notes - and i'm probably gonna get lost in the process (I have a small scrap of paper with an odd semblance of order to contend with)
So! - what happened? who played? what did they play? who was there? Did Terry donate to the raffle ?
Well first thing first - the band cancelled on Nick! - so, as it was last minute, he made the whole night an open mic showcase - as this wasn't advertised he thought it wise to give people a chance to play more than once.
Due to Nick's enthusiasm and what me and Jay did last week I effectively played 3 times!!! - i'm surely gonna be punished for that at some point...
Rory was playing when I arrived - I mananged to catch a bit of it but was asked straight away by Nick to replace a string on his guitar while he dealt with everything else LOL - so while my wife and mate Andy wondered what the hell I was doing, I did that for a while LOL - fortunately I could enjoy Rory's bit when he returned later on.
Mick was a new addition to the club, a guy a little bit older than most of us (is that fair to say Mick?) who gave us two excellent rock n roll sets - I hope he returns. He gave a great version of Alison Krauss' "When you say nothing at all".
I went up on my first bit for 3 songs - Steve Stills "For what it's worth", Sam Cooke's "What a Wonderful World" and the first one of my songs, "Will to climb" - which is now playing on my myspace page. I wasn't quite "in the zone" on those ones, but my other two bits were much more satisfying.
Nick did a bit next - 2 Bowie songs - including a cracking version of "Jean Genie" with Terry on drums and Nick really slamming the percussive guitar out there. Nice.
He then did 3 of his own - getting everyone to do "swiss roll" - and "Down at the tubestation at midnight".
Paul then had his first appearance and he seemed to be better prepared than the last time - did a storming version of "That's Entertainment" (he's obviously gonna be competing with Jamie for "best Weller cover 2006".) He also made a musical mention of Arctic Monkeys which was unexpected.
Tom Kelsall was next up and I thought he was fantastic! - he said he had spent a lot of time on his new album so was sick of his songs - so wanted to throw out some covers LOL - which he did REALLY well - did Bryan Adams "Heaven", Watching the Detectives by Elvis and a song which I think he said was by Ezio - sorry if i'm wrong there - but a really strong, "giving" performance - well impressed me. He's doing an hour in a couple of weeks too so i'm looking forward to that.
Jack Courtney and Sian Courtney were next, Nick's children, and that was brilliant - Jack did Hound Dog - with an Elvis "thank you very much" at the end of it - and Sian showed off her progress in her guitar lessons with the Theme from Titanic - chips off the old block it seems - they both had the place quiet for once!!! - actually, that's something Nick tried to make clear - that it doesn't have to be quiet but sometimes people forget what's going on around them - some of those people left early too so maybe they weren't there for the same reason as everyone else anyway! LOL
Simon, a schoolmate of Nick's went up with his son, and they did a couple of standards - good singalongs - and a great laid back attitude.
Lee "with a choirboy haircut" was next - he was excellent as normal - glad he's a regular now - he said he had a sore throat but it didn't harm his performance - excellent stuff.
Rob, a newbie to the club I think, performed a couple of bluesy tracks - he had a nice, distinctive, laid back feel.
Rory was back then - this time with his bit of cardboard with contributions from me and Nick! LOL - it's a classic. "Werewolves of London" was done again (yay!) this time in BAND FORM!!! - his brother played bass and growl - and Terry played the drums - and it was a fantastic rendition - and you could see how much Rory was enjoying it - his brother was growling really well in the chorus and had a great bassline that fitted the song perfectly. A great moment.
Alex and Craig - more newbies - did some kind of emo thing I think - that was cool. After the raffle came the System of a Down tribute band called "Victims of a down" - featuring Rory's brother Dan - and Nick's face when they were playing was priceless - I think he was actually scared! LOL
Paul came back with a couple more - including another Weller LOL
Mick returned with more rock n roll...
...Tricia did some really funny stuff from the net - I especially liked the gynaecologist one - which I won't tell you here as this blog is long enough as it is!!
- then I came back with "Lorelei", and "By Choice" - and I REALLY enjoyed it. I think I found "the zone" again on those.
Cool Banana followed with a great version of "Walk on the wild side" - which had Nick going into the audience with the mic getting everyone innocently sitting at the table to sing the "do do do" bits - and in that one I swear I have never seen a triangle played with such emotion as the guy in Cool Banana was playing it - he REALLY MEANT IT! LOL
Jay was last - and after a couple of his lovely self-penned songs, Nick asked him to get me back on with him to reprise the Beatles numbers we did last week - so we did and it felt wonderful!! Thanks Jamie for suggesting we did those by the way!
Then Jay finished with "You do something to me" - a Paul Weller song (Paul from earlier must have been making notes at this point LOL) and it was a lovely, fitting end to another great night.
....except of course - I had too much to drink and ended up playing a loose, loud series of games of "Buzz" with some mates that sat with us.
(then it was the end....)
Throughout all this I was made massively ecstatic as 2 mates I did stuff with years ago turned up to see me - and we're gonna sort something out - and they'll be playing next week - and I can't wait to see them again playing and work with again too - they're both called Rich and they're both excellent (and lovely blokes)
Are you still reading??? LOL
